Uncanny Fantasy Photos

While critiquing Virginia's work on Tuesday a thought came across my mind but I could not remember the artist's name that I was thinking of. Frieke Janssens has made some fictional photographs of children smoking, a taboo act that lands close to how Virginia models her characters in a sexualized way. Kids will be kids.

The process video above made me think of both my own work, but also of the colony creations that Kelly Shannon works to create.

For anyone interested, I just started publishing my lesson plans on my blog. Here's one called "Hands-Off".

Cal Lane

Interesting play of signifiers, especially with her Wheelbarrows and Shovels, series. The machismo of tools nuanced with the delicacy of lace. Thought this might be of interest for those who like working with contrast. This also appeals to me as I have a hard time escaping the "image of things," and perhaps relate more intuitively to image than object.

Sugar Carpet by Aude Moreau

I thought Sugar Carpet by Aude Moreau might be of interest to Stephen Watson.

Karina Smigla-Bobinski balloon drawing

I have also been thinking a lot about how to allow the objects to function in a way that the residue of their action is captured on paper. I like the way Karina Smigla-Bobinski used the balloon and transformed the object into an untethered drawing tool.

I saw this Trudy Moore's work featured on one of the postings I follow on facebook. I'm considering bringing this into my drawing 1 class as a texture assignment. Perhaps having student overlap two textures to create and unexpected texture in the final drawing/sculpture.

Here's a link the the awesome atom splitter thing Kelly and I were talking about that Tom B. has shared with us.

Ernesto Neto

If we were all referring to the same artist, I believe Ernesto Neto is one we might have been trying to recall during Kelly Parvin's critique. But if not, please clarify. It does seem fitting. The piece I saw was at the Pompidou in Paris—pictured below. Each hanging "pod" contains a spice...cloves, cumin, turmeric, etc. which really brings on the sensual. An olfactory and tactile extravaganza, although you were directed not to touch!

George W. Bush

To start things off.. a hacker recently discovered and leaked images of W's semi-nude self portrait paintings. Who knew? Politics aside, the following article certainly does diss the former president, but is generally more generous about his efforts with the brush.
